Student Work Examples

Complexity Maps (Seniors, Design for Complexity)

To introduce systems thinking, this project asked students to choose a complex issue and create a map that clarified all the interconnected components. It asked students to highlight stakeholders, feedback loops, and areas for intervention in their map content. Additionally, it required students to use a visual metaphor to enhance the design and the clarity of the information.

Historical Invitation Suites (Seniors, Advanced Typographic Systems)

In this project, each student designed and produced an invitation suite for a historical event of their choosing. It required personal research into the typographic styles of different time periods and locations. In addition to historical research, this project focused heavily on the technical aspects of typesetting for print and advanced production techniques for print artifacts.

Variable Type Experiments (Seniors, Advanced Typographic Systems)

This project explored the concept of variable fonts by adding a variable state to an existing font. Students selected an existing (non variable) font to use for a series of in-class workshops related to type design, type manipulation, and type animation. The final deliverable was an Instagram reel that reflected what they did in the in-class explorations.

Landmark Type Systems (Seniors, Advanced Typographic Systems)

This project asked students to develop a type-driven identity system for a landmark of their choosing. By focusing on landmarks the students had to hone in on place-based typographic references. The examples I selected show students who developed a wordmark for their landmark, and examples of students who developed their own typeface as part of the larger identity system.
